The Building Stones of Prato’s Cathedral and Bell Tower, Italy

This study defines the assemblage, lithotypes and mechanical parameters of building stones used for external cladding Prato’s Cathedral Bell Tower (XIV century), now subject to extensive conservation work. By means a drone flight, full 3D model Bell-Tower complex was developed with photoplanes façades. On this basis, GIS façades all stone elements embedded developed. Historical data organoleptic analysis enabled identification types constituting cladding. The results show that are local historical stones, namely white Alberese Palombini limestones, green Verde Prato peridotites, grey Pietra Serena sandstone. quarries provenance these were determined, along their physical-mechanical properties decay processes, in order contribute works according authenticity integrity principles.
